About Art

Arthur Bruinooge is a visual artist known for his vibrant and emotive paintings in both oil and acrylic. His work explores a diverse range of subjects, from the serene to the socially conscious, all unified by a distinct style that captures the essence of his subjects.

A versatile painter, Bruinooge's portfolio includes serene landscapes, expansive seascapes, and intricate building scapes that highlight the beauty of both the natural and man-made world. He also creates striking colorful maps and powerful abstracts. It is in his abstract work that Bruinooge often addresses deeper themes, creating pieces that either portray a specific social issue or are designed to evoke a strong emotional response from the viewer.

The abstract painting titled “Tent City” tells a story about homelessness in America. The painting portrays what a homeless camp looks like from above. The blocks of color depicts tents scattered in a haphazard yet somewhat organized fashion. The letters and numbers all have meaning. In 2024 homelessness in the US grew by 18%. One third are children with 85% of homeless families headed by a single mother. Homeless verterns total 32,882. Mental illness and substance abuse accounts for 66% of the homeless population. There are 150 million people that are homeless worldwide. This painting is on exhibit at the Portsmouth Historical Society though October 3, 2025.

Bruinooge’s art is not only visually compelling but also purpose-driven. A portion of each sale supports local charities, reinforcing his belief that creativity can—and should—serve the greater good. The painting titled “Birds Eye View Of Portsmouth” and it was made into a greeting card to raise funds and awareness for CASA of NH (casanh.org).

Bruinooge has been a Juried Member of the prestigious New Hampshire Art Association (NHAA) since 2018, a testament to the quality and consistency of his work. His art is exhibited in various locations, including a permanent presence at A Pleasant Shoppe, and he is also a periodic exhibitor at the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery and the Portsmouth Historical Society.

His artistic home is his studio, located in the historic Ben Franklin Block Building at 79 Congress Street in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where he continues to create and refine his unique vision.
